Remap FAQs

Will remapping invalidate my warranty?

Technically modifying any part of a car can invalidate some or all elements of a manufacturer or approved used warranty. However in most cases no physical modification will be made to your ECU. In most cases the remap can be uploaded via the OBD port. The supplier of the remap software strives to make the software as undetectable as possible to the dealer’s diagnostic equipment. While you car is in warranty, the manufacturer may carry out recalls from time to time, should you have one involving an engine ecu update, then you will loose the map.

Can the remap software be uninstalled?

The remap process can be completely reversed and put back to standard. Should you wish to have your remap removed if you sell your car, we would be happy to reverse the process for a small service charge. Likewise if your car loses the remap software due to a software upgrade at the main dealer we would be able to reinstall the remap software, but if the new software has been subject to an update then there may be a chage to then re alter your tuned file.

Should I tell my insurance company?

Although the software may be very hard to detect, technically it is a legal requirement to tell your insurance company if you modify your car in any way, but it would be the customers choice if they chose to do so or not. Some insurance companies will not penalise you for remapping your car.

Will remapping my car increase fuel consumption?

If you continue to drive your car in the same manner as you did prior to the remap customers say that they actually use less fuel on turbo diesel cars and can see anything from 1 MPG to 7 MPG depending on whether urban, combined or motorway driving, some vehicles may actually achieve more. Petrol cars will also have better fuel economy also, but again depending on how it is driven.

What is the difference between chipping and remapping?

Remapping is done by uploading modified software on to an ECU of a car normally via the OBD port. It is not normally necessary to make any physical modification to the car. Chipping is a process that was mainly done on pre 2000 cars which didn't have an OBD port. This involved opening up the ECU and de soldering the eprom from the ecu circuit board and rewriting that eprom and soldering back on. Some of the later ecus require removal to get past the tricore element to prevent tuning an ecu.

Tuning Box vs Remap ?

A Tuning Box is another option, especially for vehicle's in warranty or lease vehicles as it can be fitted in minutes and removed. It works by modifying the signal from the fuel pressure sensor and sends modified data back to the engine ecu which then alters the turbo pressure and fueling for the vehicle.

Useful if there is no remap solution for your vehicle or it's in warranty or a lease car etc.

The Remap option alters all maps that are available to be modified in the ecu map i.e Fuel at part throttle , Fuel at acceleration, Fuel rail pressure, Turbo pressure, Turbo Over boost, Torque limiters etc etc... and other maps like egr and dpf instruction maps should they need to be turned off.

The Tuning box option intercepts the output signals from the fuel rail pressure sensor and the turbo boost pressure sensors and modifies them at certain areas to achieve better performance.

My car has Anti remapping software, can it be mapped ?

Later vehicles built in the second half of 2009 like Audi, BMW and Vauxhall etc. have anti tuning block on them that prevents a tuned file from being uploaded via the obd port in the car. As of the later part of 2014 remap equipment has had updates to now be able to do these ecus by obd now, but there are still some versions that have to be bench remapped.

Why do remaps differ in cost from one company to another ?

Quite simply due to overheads and quality of the work and support backup. Some remapping companies or agents will use cloned / copied equipment from china and hacked software etc that they are able to buy alot cheaper than original genuine equipment and software. This type of equipment has no support and can have bugs and glitches that can interfere with reading or writing of a file to your car and then leave the ecu ' bricked ' We know as be have corrected a few bricked ecus for these type companies now.

With genuine equipment and software we have full support from the manufacturer should a problem occur during a flash, the ecu can be recovered back to its original state.

Map files are not all the same. Some companies will mod your original file and put massive gains on a standard engine with no mods and untested therefore to much for a standard road car and can lead to premature turbo failures etc.... Others will have a disc they bought from ebay with a few thousand generic tunes on that god knows what has been done to them.

Our files are developed at atm-chiptuning where hours have been spent on R&D to prepare the tune. These templates are then saved and the increment alterations are then applied to the original file and if required are then fine tuned to your engine depending on mileage etc etc... We also have our own genuine map writing software ( swiftec and ecm ) which is used for editing the final map. We also have invested in a Dyno dynamics AWD DS450 rolling road for further file developement and testing.

Our maps are also insurance backed, so in all, this is why maps vary in cost for one place to another. If the company you are looking to use has all genuine equipment, software, insurance and business premises and vat registered, these would be a good choice over the man in a van with hacked software, and cloned equipment offering untested maps .This is why some offer cheap remaps, its cos they are.... This is our business, not a sideline .....
